The chromosomes of human intraepithelial neoplasia: report of 14 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and review.

Chromosome counts and karyotypes were prepared from samples of dysplasia and carcinoma in situ of the uterine cervix in 14 patients with the use of tissue culture technics. The material for initial culture was identified as neoplastic epithelium in vivo by colpomicroscopy. Then a biopsy was obtained from within this area; one half was fixed for histologie examination, and in the remaining half, the neoplastic epithelium was separated from the connective tissue, minced, and placed in culture. When chromosome counts were performed each case had a modal number of 46 and predominantly normal karyotypes, except for 1 case of dysplasia in which a marker chromosome was found.
